The arrival of the cousins in Act one Essay Example for Free
The arrival of the cousins in Act one Essay Compare the way Miller presents the relationships between Beatrice, Eddie and Catherine, before and after the arrival of the cousins in Act one.Ã In 1915 America was seen as the land of freedom for many Italians and they fled from the poor, grimy streets of Italy. America was there only hope and they came in there thousands to earn money for there starving families and find a new life. The Carbone family as presented by Miller is one such family. The Carbone household conceals a web of mixed feelings and from the start you can feel the tension brewing under the false smiles and unspoken conflict. We are introduced to Eddie Carbone, Beatrice Carbone and Catherine at the start of the play yet we are not told of there relationships with each other until later. At first it seems that Eddie and Catherine are together and we have no idea that they are uncle and niece.Ã Beatrice knows of Eddies feelings yet says nothing. This all adds to the tension and we know its all going to explode, the only question is when.Ã The cousins arrival aggravates this or and even adds more conflict and tension. The first impression we get of the relationships in the house is that Eddie and Catherine are lovers. There actions towards each other are sexual and flirtatious yet they are trying to hide it. This is shown when Eddie refers to Catherines skirt as beautiful he could have been talking about the skirt or maybe Catherine as a whole. The relationship between Eddie and Beatrice on the other hand is one of duty rather than love. Beatrice is silent to what is going on around her. This shows the power Eddie holds over her. This is displayed throughout the play, by the lack of respect given to her and by how he speaks to her. For example you lived in a house all your life, what do you know about it? this shows he doesnt respect her and thinks she has an easy life. Catherine and Beatrices relationship is quite innocent at first and there doesnt seem to be much between them, it later appears that Beatrice holds a deep jealousy of the relationship she has with Eddie. This is shown by miller when Beatrice confronts Catherine about her behaviour around Eddie. Like when he comes home you throw yourself at him like when you was twelve years old Although it is apparent to us that the relationship between Eddie and Catherine one of a sexual or desiring nature. Catherine appears to be oblivious to it, for example she strikes a match and holds it to his cigar this is a very up-close and personal act and then she blows out the match, this seems a very sexual act, with them being so close and her blowing out the match so close to his face, yet Catherine does not make anything of it and carries on. Catherine sees Eddie as a Father figure and is always seeking to impress him. Her actions are often mistaken to be flirtatious when they can also be seen as innocent behaviour of a young girl looking for her fathers approval. One such instance is when Catherine starts running her hands over her skirt this can be seen as flirting or it can also be seen as though she is nervous because she does not know if Eddie approves.Ã This is also apparent when Eddie says you aint all the girls this shows that he considers her to be special either because he is in love with her or because he sees her as his daughter Beatrice Knows of Eddies feelings towards Catherine however she cannot say anything because she fears Eddie and she holds it in, taking the anger out in her actions. For example when she is mad she gets up, clearing the dishes this shows that she doesnt want to confront Eddie therefore she occupies herself with other tasks. Beatrice is also jealous of Catherine; she wants the same relationship that Catherine has with Eddie. Eddie holds the power in the house, with him being the only man. Both women look up to him and never contradict him. Miller clearly shows this throughout the start of Act 1. An example of Eddies power is when it says Eddie is standing facing the two seated woman this shows the women look up to him and it also forms a triangle with him being the top point, showing his power over them. This can also be seen as though both women are competing for Eddie.

Engine Failure Of Flight 191 Engineering Essay
Engine Failure Of Flight 191 Engineering Essay The loss of the engine by itself should not have been enough to cause the accident.[12] Flight 191 would have been perfectly capable of returning to the airport using its remaining two engines, as the DC-10 is capable of staying airborne with any single engine out of operation. However, several other factors combined to cause a catastrophic loss of control. The engine separation had severed the hydraulic lines that controlled the aircrafts leading-edge wing slats (retractable devices that decrease a wings stall speed during takeoff and landing). The damage to the lines caused a loss of hydraulic pressure, which in turn led to uncommanded retraction of the outboard slats in the left wing.[1] Unlike other aircraft designs, the DC-10 did not include a separate mechanism to lock the slats in place.[1] Investigators examined the flight data recorder (FDR) and conducted wind tunnel tests and flight simulator tests to understand the trajectory of flight 191 after the engine detached and the slats retracted. These tests established that the damage to the wing leading edge and retraction of the slats increased the stall speed of the left wing from 124kt to 159kt.[1] Comparison of the FDR data and the simulator tests showed that the pilots of flight 191 had followed the procedure for engine failure at take-off. This procedure called for the captain to go to VHYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_Speeds#Other_reference_speeds2 (standard safety takeoff speed) which for flight 191 was 153kt, 6kt below the stall speed.[1] At the time the engine fell off the aircraft, flight 191 was already travelling at 165kt, safely above the stall speed. Thus, by slowing the aircraft to 153kt in accordance with the emergency procedure, the pilots inadvertently induced the stall which proved fatal. Following this accident, McDonnell Douglas revised the procedure, advising that if the aircraft was already flying faster than V2 plus 10kt the pilots should maintain a margin of 10kt above V2.[1] The DC-10 incorporates two warning devices which might have alerted the pilots to the impending stall: the slat disagreement warning light which should have illuminated after the uncommanded retraction of the slats, and the stall warning system (stick-shaker) which activates close to the stall speed. Unfortunately, both of these warning devices were powered by an electric generator driven by the no. 1 engine; following the loss of that engine, they both became inoperative.[1] [edit] Engine separation An FAA diagram of the DC-10 engine and pylon assembly indicating the failed aft pylon attach fitting. From an examinaton of the detached engine, the NTSB concluded that the pylon attachment had been damaged before the crash.[1] Investigators looked at the planes maintenance history and found that its most recent service was eight weeks before the crash, in which engine number one had been removed from the aircraft, however the pylon, the rigging holding the engine onto the wing, had been damaged during the procedure. The original procedure called for removal of the engine prior to the removal of the engine pylon, but American Airlines had begun to use a procedure that saved approximately 200 man-hours per aircraft and more importantly from a safety standpoint, it would reduce the number of disconnects (i.e., hydraulic and fuel lines, electrical cables, and wiring) from 72 to 27.[1] The new procedure involved mechanics removing the engine with the pylon as one unit, rather than the engine, and then the pylon. A large forklift was used to support the engine while it was being detached from the wing a procedure that was found to be extremelly difficult to execute successfully, due to difficulties with holding the engine assembly straight while it was being removed. The field service representative from the manufacturer, McDonnell-Douglas, said it would not encourage this procedure due to the element of risk and had so advised American. However, McDonnell-Douglas does not have the authority to either approve or disapprove the maintenance procedures of its customers.[1] The accident investigation also concluded that the design of the pylon and adjacent surfaces made the parts difficult to service and prone to damage by maintenance crews. The NTSB reported that there were two different approaches to the one-step procedure: using an overhead hoist or using a forklift. United Airlines used a hoist; American and Continental Airlines used a forklift. According to the NTSB, all the cases wherein impact damage was sustained and cracks found involved the use of the forklift.[1] Under the procedure American used, if the forklift was in the wrong position, the engine would rock like a see-saw and jam against the pylon attachment points. The forklift operator was guided by hand and voice signals; the position had to be spot-on or could cause damage. Management was aware of this. The modification to the aircraft involved in Flight 191 did not go smoothly. Engineers started to disconnect the engine and pylon, but changed shift halfway through. When work continued, the pylon was jammed on the wing and the forklift had to be repositioned. This was important evidence because, in order to disconnect the pylon from the wing, a bolt had to be removed so that the flange could strike the clevis. The procedure used caused an indentation that damaged the clevis pin assembly and created an indentation in the housing of the self-aligning bearing, which in turn weakened the structure sufficiently to cause a small stress fracture. The fracture went unnoticed for several fligh ts, getting worse with each flight. During Flight 191s takeoff, enough force was generated to finally cause the pylon to fail. At the point of rotation, the engine detached and was flipped over the top of the wing. [edit] Conclusion The findings of the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were released on December 21, 1979:[1] The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the asymmetrical stall and the ensuing roll of the aircraft because of the uncommanded retraction of the left wing outboard leading edge slats and the loss of stall warning and slat disagreement indication systems resulting from maintenance-induced damage leading to the separation of the No. 1 engine and pylon assembly at a critical point during takeoff. The separation resulted from damage by improper maintenance procedures which led to failure of the pylon structure. Contributing to the-cause of the accident were the vulnerability of the design of the pylon attach points to maintenance damage; the vulnerability of the design of the leading edge slat system to the damage which produced asymmetry; deficiencies in Federal Aviation Administration surveillance and reporting systems which failed to detect and prevent the use of improper maintenance procedures; deficiencies in the practices and communications among the operators, the manufacturer, and the FAA which failed to determine and disseminate the particulars regarding previous maintenance damage incidents; and the intolerance of prescribed operational procedures to this unique emergency. The NTSB determined that the damage to the left wing engine pylon had occurred during an earlier engine change at the American Airlines aircraft maintenance facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 29 and 30, 1979.[1] The evidence came from the flange, a critical part of the pylon assembly. [edit] Aftermath First responders survey the Flight 191 crash site in Des Plaines, Illinois. Problems with DC-10s were discovered as a cause of the accident, including deficiencies in both design specifications and maintenance procedures which made damage very likely. In response to this incident, American Airlines was fined by the United States government $500,000 for improper maintenance procedures[12]. Two weeks after the accident, on June 6, the FAA ordered all DC-10s to be grounded until all problems were solved. The ban was lifted on July 13.[13] The crash of another DC-10 in November 1979, Air New Zealand Flight 901, would only add to the DC-10s negative reputation at the time however, Flight 901 was caused by several human and environmental factors not related to the airworthiness of the DC-10, and the aircraft was later completely exonerated in that accident. Although McDonnell Douglas employees participated in an Im proud of the DC-10 campaign, the companys shares fell more than 20% following the crash of Flight 191. In 1997, the McDonnell Douglas company was taken over by its rival, Boeing. Despite the safety concerns, the DC-10 went on to outsell its closest competitor, the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, by nearly 2 to 1. This was due to the L-1011s launch being delayed, the introduction of the DC-10-30 long range model without a competing TriStar variant, and the DC-10 having a greater choice of engines (the L-1011 was only available with Rolls-Royce engines, while the DC-10 could be ordered with General Electric or Pratt HYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt__WhitneyHYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt__Whitney Whitney engines). The DC-10 program also benefited from obtaining a U.S. Air Force contract to develop a long-range refueller, which culminated in the KC-10 Extender. Lockheed had no such support for the TriStar, and halted production in 1982. NTSB investigation The crash of flight 191 brought fierce criticism from the media because it was the fourth fatal accident involving a DC-10 at the time. Six hundred and twenty-two people had died in DC-10 accidents, including flight 191. As the weather was perfect for flying and there was no indication that a flock of birds or another plane caused the crash, the remains of engine #1 raised serious concerns of the safety of the DC-10. The separated engine was not the only concern, as the public wanted to know whether the detached engine was the only cause of the crash. Investigators wondered if a fire was possibly the cause, as this was backed up by testimony from air traffic controller Ed Rucker who said he saw a flash from the wing. This raised concerns that 191 was the result of a terrorist attack. Sixty witnesses who saw the plane on the runway ruled out a bomb, as they all saw engine #1 swing forward then flip up and over the top of the wing, which pointed to structural failure as the cause. The findings of the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were released on December 21, 1979. It revealed the probable cause to be attributable to damage to the left wing engine pylon that occurred during an earlier engine change at American Airliness aircraft maintenance facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 29 and 30, 1979. cite web |url=http://amelia.db.erau.edu/reports/ntsb/aar/AAR79-17.pdf |title=NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) Report] Evidence came from the flange, a critical part of the pylon assembly. It was revealed to be damaged before the crash, and investigators looked at the planes maintenance history and found it was serviced eight weeks before the crash. The pylon was damaged due to an ill-thought-out engine removal procedure. The original procedure called for removal of the engine prior to the removal of the engine pylon. To save time and costs, American Airlines, without the approval of McDonnell Douglas, had begun to use a faste r procedure. They instructed their mechanics to remove the engine with the pylon all together as one unit. A large forklift was used to support the engine while it was being detached from the wing. This procedure was extremely difficult to execute successfully, due to difficulties with holding the engine assembly straight while it was being removed. This method of engine-pylon removal was used to save man hours and was encouraged despite differences with the manufacturers specifications on how the procedure was supposed to be performed. The accident investigation also concluded that the design of the pylon and adjacent surfaces made the parts difficult to service and prone to damage by maintenance crews. According to the History Channel, cite video title = The Crash of Flight 191 url = http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id=71451 publisher = The History Channel publisherid = AAE-71451 medium = DVD] United Airlines and Continental Airlines were also using a one-step procedure. After the accident, cracks were found in the bulkheads of DC-10s in both fleets. The procedure used for maintenance did not proceed smoothly. If the forklift was in the wrong position, the engine would rock like a see-saw and jam against the pylon attachment points. The forklift operator was guided by hand and voice signals; the position had to be spot-on or could cause damage, but management was unaware of this. The modification to the aircraft involved in flight 191 did not go smoothly; engineers started to disconnect the engine and pylon but changed shift halfway through; when work continued, the pylon was jammed on the wing and the forklift had to be re-positioned. The fracture went unnoticed for several flights, getting worse with each flight that the plane had taken. During flight 191s takeoff, enough force was generated to finally cause the pylon to fail. At the point of rotation, the engine detached and was flipped over the top of the wing. The loss of the engine by itself should not have been enough to cause the accident. During an interview on Seconds From Disaster, Former NTSB investigator Michael Marx mentioned there were other incidents where the engine fell off, yet they landed without incident. Flight 191 would have been perfectly capable of returning to the airport using its remaining two engines, as the DC-10 is capable of staying airborne with any single engine out of operation. Unfortunately, several other factors combined to cause a catastrophic loss of control. The separation of the engine severed electrical wiring and hydraulic lines which were routed through the leading edge of the wing. The damage to the lines caused a loss of hydraulic pressure, which in turn led to uncommanded retraction of the outboard slats in the port wing. The DC-10 design included a back-up hydraulic system which should have been enough to keep the slats in place; however, both lines are too close together, a design also used on the DC-9. There should have been enough fluid to keep the slats extended, so investigators wanted to know why they were never re-extended by the pilot. The answer came from the end of the recording on the CVR. The number 1 engine powered both the recorder and the slat warning system, which left the pilot and co-pilot with no way of knowing about the position of the slats. Investigators examined the FDR to see what occurred after the engine detached. The procedure called for the captain to go to V2 which he did perfectly, but investigators found that it said nothing about incidents where the speed was already above V2, as it was in this case. Therefore, the pilot had to reduce speed. Simulator tests were done to see if this made a difference; 13 pilots followed the procedure 70 times and not one was able to recover. The NTSB concluded that reducing speed when the slats are back may actually have made it more difficult for the pilot to recover control of the aircraft. When a DC-10 is about to stall it gives two warnings: The first is the stick-shaker which causes the yoke to vibrate, and the second is a warning light that flashes. These combined warnings should have alerted the pilots to increase speed immediately. American Airlines had chosen to have the stick-shaker on the pilots side only, but the stick-shaker did not operate because it was powered by the missing left engine. In the event of an engine failure, it is possible for the flight engineer to switch the pilots controls to a backup power supply. However, inv estigators determined that in order for him to access the necessary switch, the engineer would have had to unfasten his seat belt, stand up, and turn around. The DC-10 hit the ground with a bank of 112Ãâà °, and at a nose-down attitude of 21Ãâà °. The NTSB concluded that given the circumstances of the situation, the pilots could not be reasonably blamed for the resulting accident. In his book Blind Trust, [cite book | title = Blind Trust | last=Nance | first=John J. | authorlink=John J. Nance | publisher = William Morrow Co | isbn = 0-688-05360-2 | year = 1987] John J. Nance argues that the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act caused havoc and induced cost-cutting in the industry, producing a serious erosion of the margin of safety for passengers. Nance argues that the industry reverted from an industry under partial surveillance to an industry running on the honor system. Aftermath Problems with DC-10s were discovered as a cause of the accident, including deficiencies in both design specifications and maintenance procedures which made damage very likely. Since the crash happened just before a Western Airlines DC-10 crashed in Mexico City and five years after a Turkish Airlines DC-10 crashed near Paris, the FAA quickly ordered all DC-10s to be grounded until all problems were solved. The result of the problem-solving was an arguably more efficient and safe DC-10. The US government fined American Airlines $500,000 for improper maintenance procedures, but the insurance settlement for the replacement of the aircraft gave American Airlines $25,000,000 beyond the amount of the fine.Fact|date=June 2007 Although the companys employees participated in an Im proud of the DC-10 campaign, McDonnell Douglas shares fell more than 20% following the crash of Flight 191. The DC-10 itself had a bad reputation, but ironically it was often caused by poor maintenance procedures, and not design flaw. In 1997 the McDonnell Douglas company was taken over by its rival, Boeing, which moved its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago. Despite the safety concerns, the DC-10 went on to outsell its closest competitor, the Lockheed L-1011, by nearly 2 to 1. This was due to the L-1011s launch being delayed and the DC-10 having a greater choice of engines (the L-1011 was only available with Rolls-Royce engines, while the DC-10 could be ordered with General Electric or Pratt Whitney engines).

The Rise, the Fall, and the Climbing: The Native American Experience Education: ââ¬Å"the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.â⬠Such a term has different applications to various societies and cultures. The typical ego-centric viewpoint of Western education: textbooks, institutions, curriculums, and degrees overshadow the broader sense of this definition. Education captures a wider lens of more than just standardized test scores and the classroom; but interwoven tapestries of ancestral roots, cultural heritage awareness, and life lessons well-learned and passed on to the next generation of Native American boys and girls. To begin with, the branding of ââ¬Ëgender inequalityââ¬â¢ was inapplicable to men and women in various Aboriginal tribes. In fact, they could be described as a kinship with mutual contribution and expectance. Men were responsible for hunting and defense; therefore they were public representatives of their tribes. Women, on the other hand, functioned as the ââ¬Ëbackboneââ¬â¢ of the community, owning the familyââ¬â¢s housing and household goods, farming and gathering of foodstuffs, and even serving as members of the counsel in political matters. Such opportunities and skills were passed down to their offspring, who would be raised as productive members in their collectivist society with a strong cultural heritage and confidence in their identity that promised self-efficacy among the sexes. This leads us to the most important role that both genders shared: instruction and education. Again, setting aside our own view of education, both men and women served as ââ¬Ëteachersââ¬â¢, or storytellers; orally... ...ircle and there's nothing you can do about itâ⬠(Alexie 163). The reused books, the recycled mentality-it is all a harsh cycle that most Native Americans at present feel ââ¬Å"thereââ¬â¢s nothing you can do about it.â⬠Taking a retrospective look into the differences in females and males, we find that women have proven to be leaders, both before and after assimilation. But even at present, Native American women are the high-profiled victims of physical and sexual abuse, addiction, and pregnancies. Yet, they fuel their hope and future through education: adopting the Western view and reconnecting with their own cultural foundation. Men, also in the frame of Alexie, struggle among the disparaging HUD homes, the painfully accessible bottle, and failure, but if there is a word that will conclude the rise, the fall, and the climbing of the Native Americans, resiliency is the word.

Drama Essay Essay
ââ¬Å"Drama and theatre in their content and style reflect the society from which they springâ⬠ââ¬â To what extent is this true of contemporary Australian theatre practice? Theatre is a direct reflection of life and society. Any script is written, including their themes and genre, in the attempt to draw on and display our surrounding world to ultimately impact audiences. Our unit of drama including Matt Cameronââ¬â¢s Ruby Moon and Jane Harrisonââ¬â¢s Stolen does exactly this, but more specifically reflects on contemporary Australian culture and events. This combined with our experiential learning proved that theatre indeed is a mirror to society. Ruby Moonââ¬â¢s depiction of suburbia and its ââ¬Å"dark underbelly that lurks beneath an idyllic, picture-perfect veneerâ⬠serves as the main content of the play and a powerful comment on Australian society. Growing up in suburban Melbourne, playwright Matt Cameron reflects his childhood experiences through contemporary theatre. This involves an abandonment of genre classification through a deliberate pastiche of styles, creating dramatic tension and stimulating audience. Non-realism, the fractured fairy tale, absurdism, horror, gothic, crime, humour, vaudeville and surrealism all combine to create ambiguity and therefore unpredictable tension. In addition, Ruby Moon is typically non-realist and non-traditional, and this ambiguity is evident in the unresolved ending of Rubyââ¬â¢s existence; ââ¬Å"was there a child, Ray?â⬠¦or are we just having the same nightmare?â⬠Leaving the audience with more questions than answers opts out of the traditional resolution and rather mirrors the confronting complexities of contemporary Australian society, we are not the ââ¬Å"luckyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠country, rather as Cameron quotes; ââ¬Å"a picture-perfect veneerâ⬠, a paradox that the seemingly suburban proximity that defines Australia does not equal ââ¬Å"intimacy, fraternity, communityâ⬠. This is especially evident through experiential learning, the pair undertaking the final scenes tended towards Realism and believable Stanislavsky styled acting, which for audiences, conflicted against Cameronââ¬â¢s covert intent of ambiguity. However, the opening scenesà performed in our class took the opposite approach; Brechtian in style, especially in the ââ¬Å"stripped backâ⬠manner of set; two chairs were the only props used, and alienation of audience through lighting and variation in pace and volume. Supporting this was the mixture of styles between heightened realism and absurdism contrasted within character ââ¬â Ray was played as the ââ¬Ëstraight manââ¬â¢, realist and serious in nature, responding and contrasting to Dulcieââ¬â¢s eccentric, loud and absurdist representation. This only heightens her unpredictability, presenting the pastiche of genre and style through character and the ambiguity beneath the suburban faà §ade. Lighting again featured as a major theatre technique in my own performance of Ruby Moon. To consolidate for the harsh white lights of our theatre space, we made the choice to turn off ââ¬Ëhouse lightsââ¬â¢; using darkness and a warm-yellow glow lamp. This provided a non-realist, eerie and uneasy atmosphere, with up-lighting on our faces; a stereotypical ââ¬Å"horrorâ⬠visual to highlight the multi-facets of our characterââ¬â¢s personas and emphasis on the sinister undertones in the surrounding darkness. The intimidating atmosphere heightened the intimacy of the actor-audience relationship as viewers themselves were enveloped in darkness and focus drawn to the only light source on stage. This also presented Brechtââ¬â¢s alienation technique through uncertainty and discomfort instilled into the perception of the fear of the unknown within darkness. This certainly juxtaposes the idyllic and conventional nature of suburbia; lights always on inside; inviting and nothing to hide, reflecting Cameronââ¬â¢s ideals of theatre and Australian society; ââ¬Å"that is the ingenious deceit of suburbiaâ⬠¦it is as much about the surrounding darkness as it is about the light.â⬠Stolen, whilst still in the realm of contemporary Australian theatre and non-realism, differs in its theatrical content, style and reflection of society. The theatre piece reflects a vital part in both our past and present Australian society; that of the Stolen Generation, dramatising the fear, agony and ongoing aftermath even in contemporary times. The style is far more overt than Cameronââ¬â¢s world of deceit; Harrison stresses the themes of identity, culture, hope and emotions of this event in a post-modern, extensive mix of performance styles and a non-linear narrative structure. This episodic sequence allows for a merging of past and present, and was carried through in our own experientialà learning. When witnessing the performances of Stolen, it is clear the focus both groups put on emotion, non-linear structure and effective use of props to convey style and content. For example, the use of a white sheet and spotlight to create silhouettes for storytelling was a powerful motif and use of a theatrical prop to not only portray the non-realist and narrative style of Stolen, but to enhance the content of family and fear. Dual scenes were simultaneously presented; one in dialogue, and the other in silhouetted visuals that emphasised and emotionalised the horrors of our Australian past. As Harrison quotes; ââ¬Å"What I wanted was to make an emotional connectionâ⬠¦I want them to think ââ¬Ëthat happened to people. How would I feel?â⬠The play also incorporates elements of Brechtââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëbreaking of the fourth wallââ¬â¢ and Realism in both the scripted and our class performance of the final scene. As the original scriptââ¬â¢s stage directions dictate; ââ¬Å"they line up diagonallyâ⬠¦just like in the first scene. Then the actors break out of their roles and talk in turn about their own experiences.â⬠The original production in 1998 did just this in relation to indigenous actors and their role in the stolen generation. However, for our class performance, students emulated the directions through their experiences in workshopping, characters, researching and performing Stolen. This simple, stripped back and realist Brechtian ending was the perfect theatrical technique and choice to reflect the plays content and importance of personal connection and emotion, adding and a contemporary spin on Australian theatre. As an audience member, it was incredibly powerful hearing actors talk unscripted and bring a true sense of realism and conviction when recounting their own experience; strengthening the actor-audience relationship through understanding and empathy. One can only imagine the immense power of individuals exposed to the stolen generation and Australiaââ¬â¢s dark past, and their re-telling of stories as actors on stage in Stolen. Witnessing our class performances, it was clear Harrisonââ¬â¢s intent of emotional connection with the audience and an empowered empathy towards the story and our own traditional and contemporary society. Theatre is simply a mirror to our society; a reflection of our past wrongs and future endeavours with the aim of social comment and audience engagement. Both Cameronââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËRuby Moonââ¬â¢ and Harrisonââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËStolenââ¬â¢ addressà contemporary Australian society content: whether it is the warped world of suburbia or our countryââ¬â¢s mistakes, both employ dramatic and theatrical techniques and style to reflect this and strengthen the actor-audience relationship. As Matt Cameron quotes, ââ¬Å"theatre exists in the imagination of the beholderâ⬠¦it is not necessarily about the black hat. It is about the blind man in the dark room looking for it.ââ¬

A study portion of FedEx s success is square(a) attributed to its committed usage of information engineering ( IT ) . IT has non merely facilitated its concern procedures like operations, client s ervice and employee preparation but anyway integrated its information web with that of its clients to supply them with seamless logistic and supply concatenation solutions.Dennis Jones, former Chief knowledge police officer ( CIO ) of FedEx says IT ( information engineering ) is a affair that has a strategic value because the shopping mall of our concern is taking a elementary service and adding information engineering services to transform into a value added merchandise. And that is in truth of import. Any company potentiometer travel freight from point A to point B. But the manner you make it a valuable merchandise to your client is to flap it with intensive information engineering capablenesss .Leveraging Information TechnologyIn the late seventiess, FedEx saw a great benefit in utilizing IT to simplify its concern procedures. Smith had really early on understood that velocity, dependability and client service was an indispensable factor for success in the nomadic tra nsit manufacture.IT in valet visionsFedEx had in topographic point interactional Video Instructions ( IVI ) that allowed employees to motor advantage of slack periods to collapse themselves at any clip of the twenty-four hours. The plan was used for preparation and trial readying ( Customer service employees at FedEx were tested doubly a class on occupation cognition ) .IT in Customer ServiceFedEx anyway used IT to better upon its client service, by superintendence assorted facets of a client s traffic. The end was to accomplish 100 % truth, quality, and client satisfaction on all minutess. One such system that FedEx used was the Service role index ( SQI ) that quantified every portion of a dealing like Was the bundle undamaged? Was the client charge right? Using the InternetThe widespread usage of the Internet from the early 1990s threw unlaced Coperni evict chances for FedEx. Since the company already had an EDI found system on which it had spent a batch of mone y, FedEx decided to utilize a combining of Internet and the EDI. One illustration was the execution through for the buying of merchandises. FedEx purchased a merchandise from a company called Ariba. Ariba was a requisitioning system that was housed on the FedEx intranet. The system was put in up so that providers could keep a database of catalogs that could be accessed by any FedEx employee. The company website hosts more than 6.3 million alone visitants per month and grips on an norm over 2.4 million bundle tracking petitions daily. More than 2 million clients connected with the company electronically every twenty-four hours, and electronic minutess cyphered for about two-thirds of the more than five million cargos FedEx delivered daily. FedEx operates one of the universe s largest computing machine and telecommunications networks- more than 75,000-networked computing machines and 1000s of handheld computing machines that recorded and tracked cargos. FedEx s informations centre pr ocesses more than 20 million information direction system minutess daily, more than any other US company. The company is mingled in linking 39 hubs across the Earth, runing 677 planes and 90,000 vehicles, supervising 200,000 employees and presenting six million bundles daily in 220 states where every second was of import. This is the FEDEX EDGE , for which the company is known for. FedEx transformed both client and concern transit metaphysical account with higher velocity, dependability, application of information engineering, improve stuff managing system and streamlined logistics web. The company popularized the constructs of just-in-time and build-to-order which reduced client s lead clip and change magnitude productiveness. Apart from embarking into logistics solution supplier the company was able to keep its leading place in secondary bundle and light cargo market through its alone hub and spoke theoretical account. The function information engineering has vie in FedEx s scheme is exciting. By utilizing IT as a major portion of its concern, FedEx has reached an about wholly new meeting of people. It has maintained its repute and increased its concern at the same clip. IT has created a greater chance for clients in the meandering(a) market. They send away now bespeak service, wage for that service, and track the bundle online. Customers no longer convey to talk to FedEx. They are now allay to order as they need, 24 hours per twenty-four hours, seven yearss per hebdomad. Because of this, FedEx s scheme has changed. It is now focused on the usage of the Internet and other technological progresss. Because this is such a scathing facet of the scheme, the execution of the scheme had to be about immediate. To vie with other major concerns in the industry, FedEx had to supply a service to clients that could be accessed utilizing engineering. They withal had to supply a bundle tracking service. As they build uped this service, their repute and con cern grew.FedEx has done some(prenominal) things with its value concatenation to develop new concern. First they imbibe ever recognized the demand to hold engineering and IT work to pass on the logistics that they run. They comport developed cyberspace engineerings that work merely and expeditiously to enable clients and Sellerss to utilize FedEx as a spell between. This has enabled umpteen a(prenominal) companies to corporate FedEx engineering into their ain web sites for clients to utilize.Question dickens Stigmatization and concern construction up until 19 January 2000Using information from the instance curriculum vitae and your ain research, critically evaluate the benefits and restrictions of jointure and Acquisition ( M & A A ) strategies in the Global Transportation and Logistics Industry. deal how FedEx Corporation managed the acquisition of timbre Systems in 1998, and find whether or non the acquisition of quality Systems was a success or trial?Mergers & A a cquisitions in the Transportation & A Logisticss industryThe Transport and Logistics ( T & A L ) sector is characterized by a important degree of denationalization, finance-raising and union and acquisition activity. Minutess are frequently complex and impacted by the regulative environment, controversy issues, or demand for contracted subsidies to back up operations. We claim witnessed many denationalizations of coach companies, ports and airdromes which stand created successful private sector groups that consume go along to turn via farther acquisitions. In other sections on that point is ongoing planetary integration at heart and between operators from the messenger, package, cargo send on and contract logistics arenas. Postal organisations and railroad companies that aim historically been more nationally oriented are now essaying chances to spread out into cross-border markets driven by a more commercial focal point and broad regulative government.Transportation & A LogisticssThe Transportation & A Logistics ( T & A L ) industry forms the anchor of planetary supply ironss. Postal operators every bit adept as big logistics suppliers play a dominant function as cardinal stakeholders in the T & A L industry. In recent old ages well-nigh former national Posts study undergone an prolonged transmutation to emerge as multinational suppliers of complex logistics and pecuniary services. These evolved entities face new competition in their nucleus markets of armor bringing through the liberalisation of markets and denationalization. At the same clip, former Posts whitethorn be able to leverage their old ages of experience in roll uping, processing, transporting and presenting national and world-wide mail in order to develop and supply a broader pallet of logistics establish services, upstream with direct mail activities and downstream with bundle bringing and payment services. Further, many bing logistics and express companies fool expanded g ood beyond simple bringing services and are now pull slay all facets of the supply concatenation. These ongoing tendencies have changed the face of an industry which has become progressively focussed on functioning clients in all parts of the universe.amalgamations and Acquisitions Three typesAmalgamation A dealing where two houses watch to incorporate their operations on a comparatively coequal footing because they have resources and capablenesss that together may make a stronger competitory advantage.Acquisition A dealing where one house buys another house with the purpose of more efficaciously utilizing a nucleus competency by doing the acquired house a subordinate within its portfolio of concerns. coup detat An acquisition where the mark house did non beg the subordination of the geting house.Problems inAchieving SuccessIntegrationDifficulties/Cultures brusquerating of mark too muchdiversification king-sized orextraordinary debtInability toachieve synergismDirectors superfl uousivelyfocused on acquisitionsToo big change magnitudemarket power whip ententry barriers testifyralize luckcompared to developing new merchandises embody of newmerchandise developmentIncreased velocityto marketIncreasedvariegationAvoid inordinatecompetitionAcquisitions soils forAcquisitionsBenefits of AcquisitionsIncreased Market condition Acquisition intended to cut down the competitory balance of the industryOvercome Barriers to Entries Acquisitions overcome dearly-won barriers to entry which may do start-ups economically unattractive pass up Cost and Risk of New merchandise Development Buying established concerns reduces put on the line of start-up venturesIncreased Speed to Market almost related to Barriers to Entry, allows market entry in a more timely mannerDiversification Quick manner to travel into concerns when house presently lacks experience and depth in industryReshaping Competitive place setting Firms may utilize acquisitions to curtail its dependance on a individual or a few merchandises or marketsProblems with AcquisitionsMerely a fiscal squad assembled and they make the tendency ( should hold two squads one fiscal and one organisational where the organisational Team says Yes or No Integration Troubles Differing fiscal and control systems tummy do integrating of houses hardInadequate Evaluation of Target Winners Curse command causes acquirer to overpay for house titanic or Extraordinary Debt Costly debt can make burdensome load on hard currency escapesInability to attain Synergy Justifying acquisitions can increase tenderness of expected benefitsExcessively Diversified merchant bank does nt hold expertness required to pull off unrelated concernsDirectors Excessively centre on Acquisitions Directors may neglect to objectively measure the value of results achieved through the house s acquisition schemeExcessively Large Large bureaucratism reduces plan and flexiblenessFedEx Corporation has made 31 acquisitions maculati on taking bets in 3 companies. Stockholders of both companies will go shareholders of a $ 15 trillion human dynamo in planetary transit and logistics. When FedEx announced in October 1997 that it was purchasing Caliber System for $ 2.4 billion, perceivers warned that the amalgamation could interrupt FedEx s already profitable express transportation concern. Perceivers were incorrect. FedEx finalized its Caliber System amalgamation in January 1998, and by the terminal of that twelvemonth, the new company, FDX, was carte du jour a seven per centum addition over the same one-fourth the twelvemonth earlier. national income grew 30 per centum that period, from $ 168 million to $ 217 m illion. The company claimed that its lens hood cost controls and low fuel monetary values contributed to this short-run increment. FedEx subordinates that came from Caliber Systems anyway grew. RPS, the largest subordinate besides FedEx, grew 14 per centum for the period, while Viking Freight grew seven per centum. In the long-run, the amalgamation strengthened FedEx s overall wellness. UPS in the main rebounded from a stultifying 15-day work block in 1997, and now the two companies compete private for the express-shipping concern in most markets. mend FedEx does conflict, several little companies incubate their reliable service for niche markets, such as logistics operations, business-to-business transit, overseas transportation, and little bundle bringing. FedEx has ensured its long-run endurance by purchasing several of these smaller companies. After the Caliber System amalgamation, FedEx included six runing divisions FedEx RPS, the second-largest small-package transp ortation concern Roberts Express, the universe s largest express drag house Viking Freight, a prima regional hauling company Caliber Logistics, a logistics outsourcing house and Caliber Technology, an order design operation.Question Three Events taking up to the January 2000 reorganizationUsing appropriate illustrations from FedEx Corporation, critically evaluate FedEx s fiscal and non-financial public introduction in the linguistic context of developments in the Internet market and e-tailing up to the January 2000 reorganization.Fiscal Performance AnalysisFedEx has an impressive public presentation record. In 1998 they had grosss of $ 15.9 billion adult 15 per centum from 1997. Gross saless have been turning steadily for the past five old ages. The net income, though, is nt that impressive. It even declined in 1997, from the lifting fuel costs during that twelvemonth. However, in 1998 it grew from $ 200,000 to $ 500,000. That could be from decrease in operating costs, or from the acquisition of the subordinates which had lower operating costs compared to federal official Express.FedEx s fiscal statements shows that its assets have non been utilized every bit good as other houses in their industry, but their profitableness is better than other industry houses. Still they moldiness diminish merchandising and administrative disbursals while increasing gross revenues. Many of their technological promotions have been financed chie strike down with national hard currency, which decreases long-run debt. Future assets perchance and should be invested in the international market and new concerns, while still puting a prissy per centum for technological promotions. Today FedEx has a competitory advantage over other houses and if they continue the patterns that they have in the past, while besides opening up to new thoughts, FedEx will stay a human dynamo in the bundle bringing industry. The fiscal ratios for FedEx understandably show that it is the market le ader in this industry, have outstanding gross revenues, a healthy net income, and a safe sum of debt. These ratios over clip demo a steady addition, except for twelvemonth 1997, where fuel costs hurt FedEx deeply.Company AnalysisIn this weapon we shall discourse FedEx s strengths and failings as a company, chances and terrors.S.W.O.T. AnalysisCompany Strengths and Resource CapabilitiesGlobalism federal Express operates on a planetary have table in 211 states. They provide services that appeal to most of the universe, get word enormous grosss and besides achieve planetary economic systems of graduated table.Invention federal official Express took aeroplanes and trucks and used them otherwise than any other company before them. This is invention. They have first-mover advantage in forebode realization because of this invention. This has helped them to stay the industry leader since 1973.Technology and Communication Federal Express utilizations and continues to seek for new engi neering. They allow passing of $ 1billion a twelvemonth, 10 % of entire grosss, for information engineering. That payload keeps clients from exchanging to other suppliers. Federal Express besides has first-class communication with their clients. They use tracking devices on all cargos, and clients can go along out where their cargo is through many different avenues including a user-friendly Web site. Federal Express clients are sure that FedEx will ever be on top of engineering.Strategic Vision Federal Express will ever hold competent top directors in charge of strategic way. Frederick Smith built an industry leader, and kept it in that place since 1973.First-Mover profit Federal Express has had first-mover advantage in several countries. ( 1 ) Bing a planetary express transit company. ( 2 ) Advanced engineering and communicating throughout the company s operations. ( 3 ) Integrating smaller companies with similar operations under its do to synergize and command more of the m arket.Strong denounce Image In 1990, Federal Express became the first company awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in the service class. In 1994, Federal Express became the first planetary express transit company to bewilder coincident system-wide ISO 9001 enfranchisement in international quality criterions. Federal Express has besides developed their ain quality system that matches their client s criterions.Company Weaknesses and Resource LacksRising Monetary values Federal Express monetary values are above their rivals . This can be a failing if their clients do non comprehend a difference between Federal Express and its rivals services.Labor Disputes with Pilots Federal Express pilots have formed the Fedex Pilots Association. This organisation demanded alterations in the pilots wages, hideaway benefits, and the fact that Federal Express outsources some foreign flights alternatively of giving their ain pilots the occupation. The pilots have a Web site where i ntelligence is posted and feelings are discussed. During the ready Christmas season in 1998, the pilots threatened to strike. Federal Express and the Fedex Pilots Association have developed a probationary instinct, which is published on the pilots Web site. However, the pilots do non believe this understanding to the full meets their outlooks. This difference is decidedly an internal failing for Federal Express, sing they have 3,500 pilots employed with them. Their operations would endure if there were work stoppages. When UPS employees went on work stoppage in 1997, Federal Express took the excess 800,000 cargos a twenty-four hours. If Federal Express employees went on work stoppage, their rivals could derive an advantage. pop offing Subordinates one at a time FDX has intentionally chosen to maintain their companies separate. In FDX s 1998 Annual Report, CEO Frederick Smith provinces, Simply layering the alone resource and operating demands of a time-definite, planetary, expre ss-delivery web onto a day-definite, discharge small-package web would certainly ensue in lessened service quality and increased costs. Under the FDX umbrella, we will leverage our divided strengths while runing each bringing web independently, with each focused on its several markets. Frederick Smith is confident this will be a strength, alternatively of a failing. beat will state.Company Opportunities expanding upon globally Federal Express can go on to spread out globally, including the other companies under FedEX.Expansion Internally Federal Express can go on to get more companies, and spread out into new engineerings or countries in their industry.Run Subsidiaries Together If FDX does nt gain from running the subordinates individually, they can alter to incorporating their operations to accomplish better synergisms and economic systems of graduated table.Contracts with Large Corporations To outride the industry leader, Federal Express should maneuver contracts with compan ies who will add cost-saving or value-adding benefits to their services.Joint-Ventures Federal Express can organize joint ventures, such as already with Netscape and American Express, to savor the growing of incorporating their client bases.Expansion of e-commerce Federal Express already has a major presence of transporting online. They should maintain chance Internet companies to contract bringing of their merchandises. Since the growing of e-commerce is rapid now, Federal Express could bask both net incomes and trade name name acknowledgment from this sort of enlargement.Company ThreatsY2k Problem If Federal Express communicating and tracking systems are nt really course of instruction 2000 ready, they will see at sea cargos, lost clients, and lost net incomes. This is a menace for every concern, but a planetary company will be touch on a larger graduated table.Community Responsibility in the U.S. Federal Express might be capable to community disapproval in enlargement wit hin the United States. Right now, Federal Express has programs to construct a second super-hub in Greensboro, NC. The airdrome is backingive, but the citizens of the community are non. Federal Express has to make up ones mind whether the community support or constructing the centre is more of import.Relationss with extraneous States Through Federal Express enlargements globally, they are capable to Torahs and ordinances of all foreign states. in that location could be major jobs in this country, stunt flying growing and elevation costs. Already, Great Britain will non allow Federal Express fly their ain planes for cargos. Federal Express must(prenominal) either lade their lading on to British planes, or usage land transit. This is really inefficient for Federal Express nevertheless, it keeps competition out for British Air Transportation companies. Everywhere Federal Express goes, they are at hazard for ordinances that resist their operations or efficiency.Economic and semip olitical Conditionss Federal Express is capable to the full universe s economic and political status in the countries of fuel monetary values and supply, client purchase of their services, and dealingss with foreign states. As a planetary company, they are capable to much more hazard than domestic companies.Industry Prospects and Overall attractive forceA tendency among Air Freight shippers is to utilize the Internet for communicating with clients and even obtaining transporting contracts with companies selling on the Internet. This confederation with the fastest-growing industry will convey exponential growing to the Air Freight industry, above and beyond what they would usually hold realized without this. This industry would stay attractive, with concentration on competition for market portion, service distinction, and trade name image.RecommendationsBased on the company history, company analysis, industry analysis and public presentation analysis, we have the undermentioned reco mmendations for Federal Express.Ensure that the employees, especially pilots, are good compensated. Since Federal Express is a service company, employees are critical to its success. Place pilots wages at or above the industry norm. They need to keep a strong presence on the Internet, in instance of a shakedown, and blow over ways to do their e-commerce user-friendly and profitable. They need to maintain monetary values within 10 % of their rivals monetary values, or do certain that their clients view their service as worth the monetary value.
